Bild: ESA /S. Corvaja, 2011The first two fully functioning Galileo satellites now orbit the Earth in about 23,222 kilometres height. They departed from the Guiana Space Centre spaceport near Kourou in French Guiana on 21 October aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket. Thus the building of an independent outer-space European satellite navigation system finally has begun. more

What is the Point of the Durban Climate Conference?

This years UN Climate Conference takes place in Durban, South Africa. Photo: Helmholtz/Oliver SeimThe next UN Climate Conference will take place in Durban, South Africa, from 28 November to 9 December 2011. Expectations are low, it is presumed that the states will not arrive at a consensus towards a follow-up agreement for the Kyoto Protocol. Cosmic Radiation Knees Understood

Cosmic radiation, massive particles from the universe, cause particle showers in the Earths atmosphere, which can be verified on the ground by the KASCADE-Grande experiment. Diagram: Tim Otto Roth/KITCosmic particles can cause so-called particle showers in the atmosphere, which can be measured in ground-based experiments such as KASCADE-Grande at the KIT. The data allow to derive mass, energy and direction of origin of the primary particles. With increasing energy, the particle flow decreases. Yet this energy spectrum displays turning points...more

Dear Readers,

Praesident Prof. Mlynek

At present, some seven billion people live on Earth. By 2050 the number will have risen to more than nine billion, according to the UNO's prognosis. With the global population the challenges faced by medicine, politics and society equally grow. Common diseases and an extending life expectancy are amongst the greatest challenges. During this year's World Health Summit in Berlin, scientists, physicians, economists and representatives from the industry discussed approaches to solutions in a global health system. Every year, the Helmholtz Association takes part in this global health convention, since it constitutes an important indicator for our research. The insights into topics of the future, such as translational research or personalised medicine, are setting the trends. The convention confirms that we are right in pursuing our Helmholtz mission: Our scientists research complex diseases and develop new strategies for early detection, prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Wishing you enjoyable reading,
