Jülich Ozone Research Awarded:

Dr Marc von Hobe and his project management team at the Research Centre Jülich has received the "FRP. NRW Award". It is endowed with a total of 90,000 Euro and was presented in Düsseldorf by Minister for Science Svenja Schulze. Other awardees are Prof. Sabina Jeschke from the RWTH Aachen university and Prof. Christian Rehtanz from the Technical University Dortmund. This is the first presentation of the award, which in future is to encourage researchers in North Rhine-Westphalia to participate in European Research Programmes. Dr Marc von Hobe from the Research Centre Jülich received the award as the coordinator of the RECONCILE project encompassing 17 partners from eight countries. The project focuses on climate change in connection with the degeneration of polar ozone. The scientists aim at a better understanding of the development of the ozone layer and the expected climate change in the stratosphere. To this end and amongst other things, they conducted measurements by airplane during the Arctic winter of 2009/2010. Jülich-based atmosphere researchers continued measurements also this winter. At present, the highest losses of ozone above the Arctic since the beginning of regular satellite measurements are being observed.
