Helmholtz Professorship for Physicist Mantl:
The Research Centre Jülich granted Prof. Dr Siegfried Mantl a Helmholtz professorship for his outstanding scientific merits. Together with his department, Mantl was decisively involved in establishing a high-performance nanoelectronics facility complex in Jülich, which allows for the development of industry-related procedures and thereby accelerates the transfer of knowledge between the laboratory and chip producing plants. He developed processes which now are firmly established in industrial production, for instance, the so-called "Jülicher Verfahren" (Jülich Process) for the production of a novel class of semi-conductors. As a Helmholtz professor, the physicist can continue to work at the Research Centre Jülich for initially three more years beyond the regular retirement age. Physicist Mantl will use the resources that come with the Helmholtz professorship to carry on further developing the preliminary research for nanoelectronics of the future together with his research team at the new Jülich Peter Grünberg Institute (PGI) and in cooperation with leading enterprises. In his function as Helmholtz professor, Prof. Mantl will work on new transistor concepts to achieve greater capacity at lower energy consumption.
