Helmholtz - Partner to the German Health Centres

Germany’s Federal Minister for Education and Research, Annette Schavan, gave the starting signal for four new health research centres. These are the German Centres for Cardio-Vascular, Lung and Infection Research and the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research. Upon recommendation from the review committees, five Helmholtz Centres will be involved alongside numerous university and extramural partners.

"The fact, that in future Helmholtz Association Centres will play a significant part in all German Centres for Health Research, is proof of the high relevance our health research enjoys", says Jürgen Mlynek, President of the Helmholtz Association. "Through close cooperation with extramural and university partners, we aim at improving the effectiveness of translational medicine and thereby want to establish a qualitatively new basis for the international ranking of German health research", Mlynek continues. 27 sites with more than 100 universities, university hospitals and extramural research institutions combine to form the four new German Centres for Health Research. From within the Helmholtz Association, involvement includes the German Cancer Research Centre, the Helmholtz Zentrum München - German Research Centre for Environmental Health, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf and the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch. Already in 2009, the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases as a member of the Helmholtz Association and the German Centre for Diabetes Research (under participation by the Helmholtz Zentrum München) were established. The federal government provides funds of 300 million Euro for the years 2011 to 2015 for building and establishing the four new German Centres for Health Research.
