Data Management for Science

The Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC) at the KIT has developed and put into operation a novel concept for the storage, administration, archiving and analysis of scientific data. The Large Scala Data Facility (LDSF) consists of an infrastructure providing storage and processing resources for research data. Experts can support users in the processing and analysis of data. Their own research topics here focus on the improvement of services such as fast and safe access to storage and computer, on the automatisation of workflows in order to  shift data to different levels within a storage hierarchy, long-term archiving as well as the development of data gateways to the LSDF and their in-depth integration into the scientific daily routine of users. The Large Scale Data Facility (LSDF), in which participate also the data processing centre and the BioQuant Institute of the University of Heidelberg, has received a "Shared University Research Grant" to the amount of 75,000 US dollar from the company IBM. Current and future users also include, in addition to BioQuant from Heidelberg, the KIT Institutes ITG (Toxicology and Genetics), IMK (Meteorology and Climate Research), ISS (Synchrotron Radiation), GPI (Geophysics), ZAK (Cultural Studies) as well as the Charité in Berlin. Close relations furthermore exist with the four KIT Centres Energy, Climate & Environment, NanoMikro and Elementary Particles & Astroparticle Physics as well as with the KIT Focus COMMputation. Moreover, the LSDF is open to users from all scientific disciplines both from the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres and from other universities and research institutions in Germany.
