Two Humboldt Professorships for Helmholtz Researchers:

Prof. Dr David DiVincenzo (Research Centre Jülich) and Prof. Dr Brian Foster (DESY) each receive a Humboldt Professorship endowed with 3.5 million Euro. This award is one of the highest endowed international prizes for research in Germany. In the context of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA), DiVincenzo is the new head of the Peter Grünberg Institute - Theoretical Nanoelectronics (PGI-2) at the Research Centre Jülich and at the same time will become the head of the soon to be newly established Institute "Theoretical Quantum Information" at the RWTH Aachen university. DiVincenzo  was one of the first physicists to focus on quantum information and is regarded as an expert of quantum information processing. In particular, he developed the quantum computer criteria known as "DiVincenzo criteria". Moreover, his work is of significance in material sciences and solid-state physics. To date, Foster headed the particle physics department at the University of Oxford and in future will continue his research at the DESY and at the University of Hamburg. There, he is to optimise the superconducting TESLA accelerator technology, developed under the leadership of DESY, in terms of maximum accelerating gradient. Furthermore, Foster will push the development of novel accelerator technologies and, for instance, examine plasma acceleration methods as regards their suitability for particle physics.
