In Brief
CCS at Ketzin Pilot Site
For the first time, GFZ researchers now have also stored CO2 from a power plant underground. So far, they have only stored high purity CO2 suitable also for the production of comestible goods in the test facility at Ketzin. The aim is to investigate the injection and storage of CO2 from technical processes in as realistic a manner as possible.
The pilot site Ketzin under supervision from the GFZ is the first European research site examining the geological CO2 storage in a mainland saline aquifer. The injection of the CO2 from the test facility "Schwarze Pumpe" (Black Pump) is accompanied by a detailed scientific monitoring programme. The monitoring methods implemented at the Ketzin site are amongst the most comprehensive and innovative methods used in the field of CO2 storage world-wide.
