Future Accelerator Technology

During a successful test experiment at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, scientists from the Technical University Darmstadt managed to accelerate hydrogen ions with the high performance laser PHELIX to up to approximately ten per cent of the speed of light. The GSI thus is one of the few research centres world-wide, where particles can be accelerated both by conventional technology, that is, by electric high voltage, and by lasers. The GSI experts now are working on accelerator concepts uniting the best features from both technologies. Such accelerator technologies could be used not only in basic research, but also in medicine and material sciences.
