Energy 2050: Gold, Silver and Bronze for Helmholtz Researchers
Together with the newspaper DIE WELT, the BMF announced an essay competition within the context of the Year of Energy 2010 with the objective to graphically illustrate energy supply in the year 2050. The first prize went to the expert for photovoltaics Henning Döscher from the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for his essay "Energie 2050: Ein Rückblick" (Energy 2050: Looking Back). Using the point of view of a 70 year old person, he describes how both the energy market and user behaviour changed over the decades preceding 2050. In doing so, he casts a glance at present-day conflicts, points towards solutions and drafts a future scenario that could actually work. The second prize was awarded to the KIT student Kai Mainzer who described the self-organisation of the future power grid. With her essay on energy migration, power donations and motorway batteries, Katharina Latif came in third in the competition. The Munich-based economic scientist is earning her PhD at the KIT with a thesis on the risks for the power supply industry arising from water shortage. Thus, the first three awards for compelling visions went to young scientists from out of the Helmholtz Association.
