Becker Receives Systems Biology Award for Interdisciplinary Research on Haematopoiesis:

Dr Verena Becker from the DKFZ was awarded the MTZ-BioQuant Award for her interdisciplinary work in the field of systems biology. The award is addressed to highly qualified young scientists at the science location Heidelberg. Verena Becker researches simultaneously at two institutions: At the DKFZ and at the BioQuant, the systems biology research centre of the University of Heidelberg. The molecular biologist works on the questions relating to her field of expertise - the signaling paths responsible for the creation of new blood cells - both in the laboratory and on the computer using mathematical models. The University of Heidelberg now honoured the young scientist for the successful combination of classical bioscience with the as yet relatively young field of systems biology. Each year, the University of Heidelberg awards the MTZ-BioQuant Award to young researchers who are a member in the research network BioQuant and work in the interdisciplinary field of systems biology. The MTZ Foundation endows the award with 2,500 Euro. Verena Becker uses this award money for relocating to the USA: As of the beginning of the next year she will continue her scientific work at the Harvard Medical School in Boston.
