DKFZ to Receive Two ERC Grants:
Two scientists from the DKFZ are the recipients of one of the European Research Council's prestigious ERC Advanced Grants. The grant recognises a project by molecular biologist Prof. Dr Michael Boutros, who intends to be the first to illustrate the interaction of all genes in the cells of a higher organism. His department is located both at the German Cancer Research Centre and at the Medical Faculty Mannheim of the University of Heidelberg. Prof. Dr Bruno Kyewski receives the ERC Grant for his intended research on how immune cells learn to tolerate structures that are part of their own organism. The immunologist investigates the basic characteristic of the immune system, that is, the ability to differentiate between self and alien. He has been working at the German Cancer Research Centre since 1984, where he was made head of the Division of Developmental Immunology in 2004.
The European Research Council was established in 2007 and provides funding for basic research to promote visionary projects and to open up new cross-disciplinary fields of knowledge. Each year, the Council invites tenders for the "ERC Advanced Grants" recognising outstanding, already well-established researchers. The grants are awarded in a highly competitive procedure.
