Leibniz Award 2012 for KIT Prof. Sanders:
Prof. Dr Peter Sanders researches and teaches at the KIT since 2004. The scientist is one of the key protagonists of algorithm engineering both on a national and international level. As an expert of algorithm engineering, Sanders and his team set a world record for energy efficient data processing in 2010 by significantly reducing energy consumption during the processing of large amounts of data by the artful use of algorithms. Computer programming and hence a key technology of our information society is based on algorithms. Efficient algorithms are material to important achievements, such as the availability of mankind's knowledge via search engines. The objective of algorithm engineering (AE) is the development of simple, practicable and high-capacity solutions for the effective use of algorithms in computer sciences.
Another successful project from the hands of the Karlsruhe-based scientist is the route planner. Optimal routes can be calculated extremely fast by way of a special process. Sanders' technology allows for the realisation of millions of route planning calculations per second, thus presenting a decisive advantage in the optimisation of logistics and traffic simulations. His work earned him the Google Research Award 2008 and 2011.
