Each year, the Helmholtz Association endows awards for teachers in recognition of their special merits in the teaching of natural sciences. The award goes to pedagogues, who specifically promote and support their pupils' independent research in the field of natural sciences. The award nominations usually are put forward by the project leaders of the federal competitions in the fields of natural sciences and technology and are submitted to the board of trustees of the Karl Heinz Beckurts Foundation for final determination. The Karl Heinz Beckurts Foundation was established in 1987 by what is today the Helmholtz Association with the intention of honouring the researcher and manager Karl Heinz Beckurts, who died the victim of a terrorist attack in 1986, and of keeping his memory alive. Research institutions and enterprises jointly contributed towards raising the funds for this foundation, the objective of which is in particular promoting the partnership between science and the economy.
