Brain Cell Computer Simulation

In the context of the transnational funding initiative "Germany - USA Cooperation in Computational Neuroscience" and together with colleagues from the Northwestern University and the Stanford University, Prof. Dr Stefan Remy from the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) receives a grant of 1.5 million US Dollar for the development of computer simulations of the neuronal network in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is an area located in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, which is of particular importance in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation. Scientist assume that in many diseases affecting the nervous system, such as Alzheimer's dementia, epilepsy and schizophrenia, the forwarding of signals between the nerve cells and their functional interconnection is altered. The project is funded for three years by the National Institute of Health and by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
