Protective Layer on Implants

Bacteria settling on implants can cause severe infection. KIT researchers and colleagues from the University of British Columbia now have managed to develop a novel kind of protective layer that can prevent the settlement of bacteria. In doing so, they affixed anti-microbial peptides on the implant surface using polymers. The settlement of bacteria and the formation of bio films thus is significantly reduced. Animal experiments indicate that the coating presents no harm to body cells. According to the research team, the novel protective coating can be applied to various kinds of implants.
