DNA Turbo
Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatism, diabetes or chronic inflammation of the intestines occur when cells from the immune system are misdirected. Normally, molecules on the cell surface function as pilots. HZI researchers now have demonstrated that the body first has to release the gene for producing the pilots. To do so, a small molecule group is removed from the pilot gene and thus triggers the turbo for production. Defective regulation could play a role in autoimmune diseases and also could be detected in the blood of patients, says Dr Stefan Flöß.
