First-rate Research on Liver Lipometabolism:
Allan Jones, young scientist at the DKFZ, has discovered a protein influencing the liver lipometabolism and which therefore may have a part in the development of cardiovascular diseases. In recognition of his findings the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Endokrinologie (German Endocrinology Association) awarded him with the Novartis Award "Junge Endokrinologie" 2011 (Young Endocrinology) endowed with 10,000 Euro. The award is granted annually by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Endokrinologie for the promotion of clinical and experimental endocrinology. Jones works as a PhD student in the Division of Molecular Metabolic Control, a research alliance between the German Cancer Research Centre, the Zentrum für Molekulare Biologie der Universität Heidelberg (ZMBH; Heidelberg University Centre for Molecular Biology) and the university hospital. Already in the past year, the award went to a scientist from the Division of Molecular Metabolic Control, Dr Philipp Kulozik. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death world-wide and according to the Federal Statistical Office, they were at the root of nearly every second death in Germany in 2009. For years now, the number of incidences is increasing steadily both within the Federal Republic of Germany and world-wide. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that the number of deaths due to diseases of the cardiovascular system will continue to increase over the next years. Although many risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases now are identified, the mechanisms and molecular interrelations ultimately leading to the development of the disease in many cases remain largely unknown.
