Helmholtz pushes ahead with open access
In summer 2010 the Helmholtz Association signed up for an open access membership in SpringerOpen, the new imprint of the Springer scientific publishing company. Under the agreement, the Helmholtz Association’s individual research centres will cover the costs incurred by their researchers when they publish in the open access journals of SpringerOpen or BioMed Central. The Helmholtz Open Access Project has provided expert support for this process and its contents. The Helmholtz Association was among the first signatories of the 2003 Berlin Declaration, and the position it supported in this document was explicitly confirmed at the members’ assembly on 17 September 2004: “Without exception, publications from the Helmholtz Association shall be made available free of charge in the future, insofar as there are no conflicting agreements with publishing companies or others.”
