Brain gain for Germany

In a rigorous multi-stage process, the Helmholtz Association has selected 18 young researchers to set up their own research groups in the association’s centres. Entailing responsibility for an annual budget of at least 250,000 euros over five years and offering prospects for a tenure-track position, these posts provide an ideal start to a scientific career and are also attractive for applicants from abroad. Ten of the 18 researchers selected come from abroad, and six German researchers are returning from abroad. The successful applicants comprise six women and twelve men.

The names (and Helmholtz centres) of the new young group leaders and directors are: Dr. Sarang S. Dalal (Jülich Research Centre); Dr. Kirstin Dähnke (GKSS); Dr. Jan Dvorak (GSI); Dr. Miriam Fritsch (GSI); Dr. Julia Frunzke (Jülich Research Centre); Dr. Jörg Hackermüller (UFZ); Dr. Hai-Kun Liu (DKFZ); Dr. Samir Lounis (Jülich Research Centre); Dr. Andriy Luzhetskyy (HZI); Dr. Daniela Panáková (MDC); Dr. Kerstin Tackmann (DESY); Dr. Oliver Rocks (MDC); Dr. Alexander Schug (KIT); Dr. Andrea Scrima (HZI); Dr. Ralf Matthias Ulrich (KIT); Dr. Tonya Vitova (KIT); Dr. Gil Gregor Westmeyer (Jülich Research Centre); and Dr. Shengqiang Zhou (Dresden-Rossendorf Research Centre, from 2011 Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf).
