Two new institutes at the Jülich Research Centre
The Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK) was founded on 1 October at the Jülich Research Centre. Its energy and atmosphere researchers will work together for clean, safe and sustainable energy production. The research sections within the IEK will soon be supplemented by an additional department that deals with material issues in electrochemical storage systems and converters. The IEK not only produces technical results, but also offers consulting services to policymakers and industry.
On 1 November, the campus of the Jülich Research Centre will be expanded to include yet another new facility: the Institute of Biological and Earth Sciences (IBG). Its research focuses will be sustainable production and the use of renewable resources. For instance, its researchers will work to optimise plant growth and produce enzyme-based ingredients for drugs. Together with the institutes of the RWTH Aachen University and the universities of Dusseldorf and Bonn, the new institute will be one of the main players at the Bioeconomy Science Center, the centre of excellence for sustainable bio-economic research in the region.
