Legionella diagnosis improved

Legionella bacteria flourish in hot-water heating systems and showers. If they enter the respiratory tract, they can cause pulmonary infections. Researchers at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research have now developed a quick diagnostic procedure to detect Legionella bacteria in drinking water and to determine whether they belong to a dangerous strain. The pathogens are identified by characteristic sequences of their DNA.
