Around one million Germans suffer from painful inflammations of the joints, commonly referred to as "rheumatism". Together with colleagues from the University of Montpellier, HZI researchers studied the role of a central inflammation factor in mice: They were able to show that blocking this factor leads to an almost complete recovery. "The inflammation reaction fell off significantly and the affected joints recovered almost completely," reports Associate Professor Gerhard Gross, Director of the Project Group "Inflammation and Regeneration" at the HZI. A crucial disadvantage of this blockage however is the fact that it also results in useful signal paths in the immune system being suppressed, something which must be further studied.
