Newly appointed:
On 1 October 2010, Dr.-Ing. Joachim U. Knebel was appointed Chief Science Officer (CSO) and member of the Extended Executive Committee at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He is in charge of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the KIT Focus Mobility Systems, the two Helmholtz programmes Nuclear Safety Research and Nuclear Fusion at the KIT as well as the scientific institutes IHM, IKET, INE, INR, ITEP on the North Campus of KIT. After completing studies in mechanical engineering and receiving his doctorate in 1993, he went on to work as a researcher at the Institute for Nuclear and Energy Technologies (IKET) at the Karlsruhe Research Centre; in 2002, he was named head of the Nuclear Safety Research Programme at KIT and spokesperson of the Helmholtz programme of the same name. From 2007 to 2009, he also served as provisional head of the Institute for Neutron Physics and Reactor Technology at KIT. Since 2006, Joachim Knebel has been, inter alia, a member of the Board of the German Nuclear Society (KTG) and since 2008 vice-chairman of the European Nuclear Society (ENS). In addition to his membership in the scientific advisory council of the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf and the American Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Joachim Knebel is the author or co-author of more than 100 scientific publications as well as the organiser of many conferences and international research projects in the fields of atomic energy and partitioning & transmutation.
