In Brief
New Polar Aircraft
The AWI is getting a new airplane for research: Like the research plane Polar 5, Polar 6 shall be used in the polar regions to take measurements not only of the atmosphere but also sea ice thickness. This way, for the first time, measurement flights can take place simultaneously in both the Arctic and the Antarctic. These measurements will contribute to improving climate models but will also provide new findings into the geophysics of the earth. Polar 6 costs around 8 million Euros.
