Prizes And Awards
Hansen Family Award for 2011 goes to DKFZ:
The Board of Trustees and the Scientific Committee of the Bayer Science & Education Foundation have selected Prof. Dr Stefan W. Hell to receive the EUR 75,000 prize which is one of the most renowned science awards in Germany. Today, his breakthroughs in the field of light microscopy allow insights into living cells and tissue which until recently seemed inconceivable. The discoveries made by Prof. Hell, who is a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen and the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, led to a new class of light microscopes which are much better able to penetrate into the molecular scale of life. The Hansen Family Award is considered to be one of the most prestigious and coveted distinctions for natural scientists in Germany. The awards ceremony will be held in March 2011 in Berlin. Since 2000, the Hansen Family Award has recognised scientists who have made groundbreaking research contributions in innovative areas of biology and medicine.
