German Centre for Diabetes Research opened
Today, around eight million people in Germany are already suffering from diabetes and the number of patients is rising. As such, diabetes is one of the diseases for which German Health Centres should be founded in order to fill gaps in research and make more rapid progress for the benefit of patients. The German Diabetes Centre (DZD) was opened on 9 November by the Parliamentary State Secretary Helge Braun (BMBF). At the DZD, five non-university and university partners will pool and expand national research expertise in the field of diabetes: the Helmholtz Zentrum München, the German Diabetes Centrum Düsseldorf, the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke, the University of Tübingen and Dresden University Hospital. The registered office is located in Munich. After the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases, the DZD is the second largest German scientific research centre. Four additional centres will be founded next year to combat important common diseases in the areas of infection, lung disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer. "With these centres, we are creating a new structure in health research in Germany," stressed Parliamentary State Secretary Helge Braun.
