Magnetic Domains in 3-D

3-D images are much sought after not only in cinema but also in science: HZB scientists around Dr Ingo Manke now for the first time managed to depict the differently magnetised fields inside magnetic materials in a threedimensional manner. For this, they scanned the probe with neutron radiation that is slightly diverted by magnetic fields, separated the diverted rays and turned the probe during measuring in order to scan it from all directions. That way they could completely illustrate the complex structure of magnetic domains. The results match well with theoretical notions. However, magnetic structures are by no means only of theoretical interest but influence material characteristics and, for example, determine the performance and life of storage media and charging devices.
