Close cooperation between basic research and clinics

Scientists at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch combine molecular-biological basic research with clinical research. Their goal is to develop new methods for diagnosing and treating serious illnesses. They want the knowledge they gain in their labs to benefit patients as quickly as possibly. This is why researchers at the MDC located on the Campus Berlin-Buch cooperate closely with the neighbouring Robert Rössle Cancer Clinic and the Franz Volhard  Cardiovascular Clinic at the Charité, the University Clinic of the Humboldt University. Both specialist clinics are maintained and run by the Helios Klinikum Berlin.

The scientists use modern molecular-biological methods in their work. The research fields covered by the MDC and its 740 staff are

  • cardiovascular and metabolic diseases,
  • cancer research,
  • molecular neurosciences.

Attractive location for young biotech companies

Research findings from lab and clinic need to be used commercially. This is why the MDC founded a limited company: BBB Campus Management Berlin-Buch GmbH. The company develops and operates a Biotechnology Park on the campus in Berlin-Buch. The other shareholders are the Berlin-based Schering AG and the Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP). So far, 30 companies have moved to the campus, creating around 500 jobs.
