Helmholtz Association

Helmholtz Institute Jena

The institute's mission is excellence in fundamental and applied research based on accelerated particles, ultrahigh-power lasers, and x-ray science.

The proposed institute combines forces of the two Helmholtz centres DESY and GSI, leading institutions worldwide, with a very broad basis in laser and photonics research at FSU to create a  unique concentration of competence. The future Helmholtz centre FZD will be closely associated to most of the institute's research activities.

Emphasis is on research at the interface of  particle accelerators and lasers to exploit synergies with large discovery potential. The  scope includes challenging projects such as strong-field QED and WDM. It focuses on innovations for large-scale equipment such as the heavy-ion facilities at GSI, the  free-electron lasers at DESY, the future international FAIR and the European XFEL facilities where  the Helmholtz association is strongly involved.
