Programme-oriented funding – a proven process drives innovation

Every five years the Helmholtz Association audits its performance as part of an overall evaluation of all its research activities. Based on the results of the assessment, the Senate of the Helmholtz Association recommended a funding plan for the 28 new Research Programmes. The Senate’s recommendations are as follows (full details can be found in the Annual Report):

Programme period from 2009 to 2013: €4.569 billion for the research fields Earth and Environment, Health, and Aeronautics, Space and Transport (includes German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and funding for non-programme-related research).

Programme period from 2010 to 2014: €4.836 billion for the research fields Energy, Key Technologies and Structure of Matter (includes funding for non-programme-related research).

Outlook – well-equipped for the future with strategic initiatives

Over the past few years the Helmholtz Association has launched a series of future-oriented strategic projects. The cross-centre collaboration during the second round of programme-oriented funding was particularly beneficial in developing such initiatives. A few examples are:

  • Helmholtz Cohort: To improve early diagnosis and treatment of diseases
  • Climate Initiative: New research network pooling expertise for studying the regional effects of climate change
  • Translation research: Basic research and clinical application under one roof
  • Improving the Helmholtz Alliance “Physics at the Terascale”: Alliance for more effective collaboration in data analysis and in the development of new IT structures and new technologies across the particle physics community in Germany.
